Boss Star Eater

Description[]

Star Eater is the final boss of Nova Drift, first appearing at wave 120. If Endless mode is turned off, the game ends when Star Eater is defeated. If Endless mode is turned on, it reappears at wave 240 and again every 240 waves after that.

The boss appears in the background two waves before it spawns. A large red star will appear alongside three long segments of its body in the background; neither the segments nor the star are tangible.

Upon being defeated, any minions spawned are instantly killed and the Star Eater will go through an elaborate death animation, culminating in a white flash that envelops the whole screen for a few seconds. If Endless mode is enabled, a large amount of XP Orbs and various power-ups are dropped in its wake.

Attacks[]

Upon entering, the Star Eater will snake around and eventually take over either the left or right side of the screen. If the player tries to move past its head, it will aggressively block the attempt.

Star Eater cycles through 6 attacks in this order:

  1. Burst: Star Eater fires large Flak-like bursts of 20+ dark fireballs at the player 3 times (4 if below 50% health).

Between this attack and the next, a ring of circling asteroids enters from the edges of the screen and slowly shrinks toward the center.
  2. Star Eater begins to sway from side to side. Each of the following 2 attacks has a 50/50 chance of being chosen:
    1. Flamethrower: Star Eater continually fires a stream of dark fireballs.
    2. Ultra Energy Beam: Star Eater fires a powerful laser beam.
  3. Lunging: Star Eater charges up and lunges at the player 3 times (4 if below 50% health). In addition to dealing knockback, there is a crescent energy aura in front of its head that deals heavy burn damage.
  4. Vortex Barrage: Star Eater charges a Vortex while firing paired streams of projectiles that arc outward, then progressively converge to cross a short distance in front of the Vortex. While Star Eater is above 50% health, the vortex is short-lived and there are 2 streams of projectiles; below 50% health, there are 4 streams and the vortex lasts significantly longer, chasing the player all around the screen well into the next attack.
  5. Splitter Orbs: Star Eater fires an orb 4 times. The orb deals burn damage, and splits evenly into 3 smaller orbs, which themselves split an additional 2 times.

After using this attack, Star Eater leaves the screen for the next.
  6. Coil Lightning: Star Eater crosses the screen 5 times, alternately traveling top-to-bottom or bottom-to-top. Its long segmented body forms diagonal barriers that shift left or right; the player must carefully wrap across the edges of the screen to avoid being crushed between Star Eater's coils (or use Blink, Apotheosis, or various other ways to escape). While crossing, Star Eater fires off lightning from its head down the segments of its body until its head reappears again.

Gallery of attacks

  • Each time Star Eater fires during the Burst and Splitter Orb attacks, it also emits a damaging circular shockwave centered on its head.
  • If the player attempts to stay to the side of Star Eater's body, rather than in front of its head, it will fire off lightning from its body segments in order to ward the player away.
  • Dark versions of Celestials and Warrior Dweller Minions can spawn at any time during the fight. Only 2 can appear on screen at a time.

Notes[]

  • Star Eater's legs are only visual - they cannot be shot nor does the player collide with them.
  • To keep the fight from lasting too long, Star Eater has a hidden vulnerability mechanic. 35 seconds after the fight starts, Star Eater will take increasing amounts of damage from the player until the fight's conclusion. Upon reaching phase 2, this amount is reduced by half.
